The interest of foreign students towards the University of Tartu has increased nearly by half
The admission of student candidates to English-language curricula in the University of Tartu has concluded. The interest of international student candidates in studies in the University of Tartu has increased by more than 45% in comparison with the previous year. The greatest interest was in the master’s programme of software engineering for which 332 applications were submitted.
According to Ülle Tensing, Senior Specialist for International Studies, 1191 applications altogether were submitted by international candidates to eleven English-language bachelor’s and master’s programmes and integrated medical programmes. The increase in the number of applications is among other things the result of additions to the English-language curricula. For the academic year 2014/2015, student candidates had an opportunity to apply for master’s programmes in Quantitative Economics and Philosophy.
“At the moment we can count the applications that were submitted electronically and correctly, but the number of candidates who present the required educational documents and pass the minimal number of points necessary for application is determined by the beginning of June latest when the decisions on acceptance are made. With international acceptance we have to consider an approximately 35% loss of candidates, that means that they either fail to meet the requirements or decline,” Tensing says. “But we are pleased with the increased number of motivated international students and the University of Tartu is an attractive educational establishments for the international youth.”
Jaan Masso, the Programme Leader of Quantitative Economics says that the increased number of submitted applications is very pleasing. In his view, the curriculum prepares top analysts skilled in economic-theoretical models and econometric methods for the analysis and prognosis of national economy for public departments, banks, international organisations and consultation agencies. “This is an area with great potential where the career outlook is very good and students understand this,” Masso said.
The applications were submitted from around 95 countries and for some years now, the highest numbers of applications come from Finland, India, Pakistan and Ukraine. How many international students and from which countries come to study at the University of Tartu will become clear in autumn.
