Overview
Contemporary Improvisation at the Master’s level is a pioneering initiative offering innovative avenues within traditional music education. In the present day music industry, being a successful musician calls for more than just proficiency in playing an instrument – it requires creativity and an open mindset. Consequently, the ability to improvise has become an indispensable aspect of a musician’s training.
For over two decades, improvisation was an elective subject at EAMT, but since the autumn of 2011, it has evolved into a dedicated Master’s programme. It invites students from all musical styles who are keen on enhancing their improvisation skills, fostering their thinking in and with sounds, honing their selfexpression and expanding their capacity to create music collaboratively. The programme is not limited to musicians alone; it extends its teaching to students who have graduated from different disciplines, such as drama or dance, and now seek to deepen their understanding of self-expression through sound. This creates an inclusive and diverse environment where students can learn from each other’s unique experiences and perspectives.
One of the primary goals of the Contemporary Improvisation programme is to cultivate open creativity, fluid communication, cooperation skills and continuous self-development in and among its students. Opportunities for practical engagement are also available, such as participation in the improvisation choir or orchestra. This enriching programme, therefore, equips its students with versatile skills that can be applied across a range of artistic and professional contexts.
